Ronen Bar-El. Erez Siniver. Yossef Tobol. We examine the effect of religiosity and gender on the level of honesty by conducting under-the-cup die experiments among secular and religious Jewish students. The highest level of honesty was found among young religious females while the lowest was found among secular females. Finally, we derive practical implications for increasing the level of honesty in society. Citations References Common to the two studies is that only female subjects were included and relatively small samples were studied 65 religious students and 61 nonreligious students in the study by Shalvi and Leiser , and 12 nuns and 19 students in the study by Utikal and Fischbacher , which means the conclusions should be made with caution, which is also recognized by the authors.
In line with the previous literature, secular females cheated more than religious females, and the same relation was found for males. Finally, having a creative mind spills over to more dishonest behavior, but evidence also suggests the opposite spillover effect where being dishonest first makes people more creative subsequently.
Arbel et al. When people you feel associated with or close to cheat, it makes you more likely to conform and also cheat.
